So. It started with a hiking group.

You know the kind. Twenty people, one group chat, very ambitious plans. “Yes, let’s all go! It’ll be amazing!” And then, somehow, mysteriously, by the third hike, there are four people left.

This is how Kat and Mostafa ended up alone together in the Italian mountains. Completely by accident. Obviously.

They talked more, laughed more, and shared little secrets somewhere between the views and pretending not to be tired. And then, Mostafa asked her out.

First date: a bar in Piazza Duomo, Trento. Very Italian. Very romantic. Probably a little awkward. But it worked.

Here is where it gets complicated.

Kat was only visiting. Her time in Trento was almost up, and just as things were getting real, she had to leave. Terrible timing. Truly terrible. But by then it was already too late to call it a hiking friendship and move on.

So: long distance.

Ryanair became a lifestyle. There were flights, delayed flights, airport arrivals, airport goodbyes, and approximately one thousand “okay, but when do we see each other next?” conversations.

Distance tried its best.

Finally, they ended up under the same roof. Then another roof. Then another. Across borders, cities, and countries: Italy, Slovakia, Czechia, Finland. Over twenty moves. Different apartments, different views, different opinions about where the bookshelf should go in a place they would probably leave in three months anyway.

It was a romantic comedy, except with more packing tape.

And in July 2025, the moment that changed everything:

They bought a couch.

Now. For a normal person, a couch is just a couch. For these two, after years of suitcases, temporary addresses, and “do we even own anything that isn’t in a bag?”, a couch was practically a declaration.

It meant: we are staying here.

One month later, Mostafa proposed.

Alpe di Siusi. The Dolomites. Kat’s favourite kind of mountains. The whole thing was disguised as a trip to celebrate their friends Moji and Mahsa’s anniversary. Kat was even handed a box and told it was the surprise gift for Mahsa.

It was not.

The mountains were enormous and very dramatic, which helped. Mostafa’s sister was there too, giving the whole thing a small Iranian khastegari twist. The plan worked perfectly. Kat was surprised. They got engaged in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

And after all the moving across borders, they knew one thing: Trento still had to be part of the story. It was where it all began, where the first date happened, and where a hiking friendship became something much harder to explain away.

So here they are.

After the hiking group that kept getting smaller, the bad timing, the Ryanair era, the twenty-something moves, and one extremely significant couch...

They’re getting married near the place where it all started.
